Ingrid Hajek was born on July 29, 1966, in Czechoslovakia. She was the only child of Jiri Hajek, a physician, and his wife, Dagmar Hajek, a nurse. When she was three, her family moved from Czechoslovakia to West Germany. Hajek has said that she has fond memories of her childhood in both countries.
In 1984, Hajek moved to the United States to attend college. She earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1988. After graduation, she worked as a designer for several years. In 1992, she enrolled in a master’s program in fashion design at the Parsons School of Design.
