The valley was first discovered accidentally by a group of mountaineers in 1931.They had just returned from a trip to Mount Kamet.Valley of Flowers was declared a national park in 1980 and 2000, and Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve added it as the second core zone. Now it is a part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere ( MAB) program. There are about 500 varieties of flowers and some plants have medicinal properties. Animal grazing is strictly prohibited in this region because some plants are threatening. On this trek, you will get to visit the memorial of Joan Margaret.

There are no luxurious stay options on this trek. There are basic lodges and you have to manage your bit. You should keep a buffer day because roadblocks often happen due to heavy rains. You should carry a good quality rain jacket or a poncho while on this trek. Waterproof trekking shoes are also recommended. Carry several pairs of socks because the monsoon rains are surprisingly unbelievable.


On the first day, drive from Rishikesh to Govindghat. It is going to be a very long drive with a distance of 269 km to cover and the duration of the drive would be 11 hours. On the second day, you drive from Govindghat to  Poolna which is a short drive followed by a 9 km trail.

Hemkund Sahib is also known as the highest Gurudwara in the world. Although it is a hard elevation, the hike to Hemkund Sahib provides a peaceful, spiritual atmosphere. You need to carry some mandatory documents for this trek. Your passport or original Aadhar card, one passport-size photo, and a disclaimer certificate. Additionally, you ought to have your medical licence.
