All the data associated with your email account is stored in this PST file. Therefore, it is very important to keep this file intact and free from any corruption.

  • Sudden power surges or power outages
  • Abrupt system shutdown due to power failure or any other reason
  • Using an unreliable third-party tool to compact PST file
  • Header corruption of PST file
  • Using an outdated version of Microsoft Outlook
  • File size limit exceeded

Methods to Fix Corrupted PST File:

There are various methods that can be used to repair a corrupted PST file. Some of the most common methods are mentioned below:

1. Scanpst.exe Tool:

The most common and recommended method to fix a corrupted PST file is by using the inbuilt scanpst.exe tool. This tool is also known as the Inbox Repair tool and is provided by Microsoft itself. This tool can be used to repair minor corruption in PST files. To use this tool, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Open the default location of your PST file. The default location of PST file is:

C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Outlook\\

  1. Now, double-click on the scanpst.exe file to open it.

iii. A new window will open. In this window, click on the Browse button and select the corrupted PST file.

  1. After selecting the file, click on the Start button to start the scanning process.
  2. Once the scanning process is completed, a summary report will be generated. This report will display the errors found in your PST file.
  3. Now, click on the Repair button to fix the errors.

2. Use Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair Tool:

If the scanpst.exe tool fails to fix the corruption, then you can use a third-party Outlook PST repair tool such as Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair Tool. This tool is very effective in repairing severely corrupted PST files. It can also be used to repair password-protected and encrypted PST files. Moreover, this tool is compatible with all the versions of Microsoft Outlook including the latest Outlook 2019. To use this tool, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Download, install, and launch Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair Tool on your computer.
  2. Click on the Add File button and select the corrupted PST file.

iii. After selecting the file, click on the Scan button to start the scanning process.

  1. Once the scanning process is completed, a list of all the recoverable items will be displayed.
  2. Now, click on the Recover button to save the recovered items.

3. Export Corrupted PST File to a New PST File:

If your PST file is severely corrupted and you are unable to open it in Outlook, then you can export its data to a new PST file. To do this, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Launch Microsoft Outlook and click on File > Open & Export > Import/Export.
  2. A new window will open. In this window, select the Export to a file option and click on Next.

iii. Now, select Outlook Data File (.pst) option and click on Next.

  1. In the next window, select the corrupted PST file from which you want to export the data.
  2. After selecting the file, click on Finish to start the exporting process.
  3. Once the exporting process is completed, a new PST file will be created containing all the data of your old PST file.
